Ivy League and other top colleges look for students with unique backgrounds, high levels of intellectual curiosity and academic ability, and the demonstrated capacity to achieve their goals. I’m asked this question by many students, who want to know what the Admissions Officers want to hear in hopes of getting in. Actually, the best way to succeed in your application process is to be true to yourself - to write an application that best expresses who you are and what you’ve achieved.
Preparing for application to top schools starts early - in the freshman year of high school if you’re applying to college - even though you won’t start writing application essays until the summer before or fall of your senior year. Throughout your high school career, go above and beyond what is expected of you. Some ways to do this are:
- Taking on leadership roles in school activities
- Founding a club or initiative
- Doing volunteer work abroad
- Completing a major creative work, such as an app, a technological device, a written work, or a musical composition
- Excelling in academia
These types of experiences will provide great material to support your application and to make you a more well-rounded student.
