C or a K at beginning of a one syllable word?

Do I start a one syllable word with a C or a K? How do I know which words start with a C and which start with a K?

You will typically start a one syllable word with a -c unless that word has an e, i, or y as its vowel. K usually likes to come at the end. I tell my students "C goes with a, o, and u, K takes the other 2 (e, & i). This works most of the time for the beginning of a word!
