Hi Paula, The definition of genre is 1) "a type, an artistic category marked by a distinctive style, form, or content. 2) A distinctive category of literary composition." When looking up certain authors you can often find the genre they prefer by their on going themes in their writing, such as romance novels by Danielle Steele or horror suspense novels by Stephen King. Edna Buchanan writes mysteries, and the genre of "The Red Shoes" is a mystery. Also, if you want to be sure without actually reading the book or story, you can find the genre listed on the verso, or copyright page. I hope this helped you.
