Most Elementary-Aged students are at a different level, developmentally, than most of their older, more matured counterparts. For this reason, studying needs to have a slightly different, less independent, and more support-centered approach. As their brains are developing superb study skills, they still require guidance and support to create the best atmosphere for the understanding and retention they desire. These strategies can be applied to all ages but require a more hands-on approach for parents of students in elementary school. Here are Five (5) proven strategies that have yielded positive results. Feel free to try some or all and comment and share your success stories. I love to read them! 1. Create A Designated Study Space: Set up a quiet and well-lit area where your child can focus and concentrate on their studies. This will help minimize distractions and create a productive learning environment. 2. Establish A Study Routine: Encourage your child to establish a consistent study routine. Set aside specific times each day for studying and make it a habit. Consistency is Key to Effective Learning. 3. Break Tasks Into Smaller Chunks: Help your child break down their study material into smaller, manageable chunks. This makes studying more manageable and prevents getting overwhelmed. Encourage them to tackle one task at a time and take short breaks in between. 4. Use Active Learning Techniques: Encourage your child to actively engage with the material they are studying. This can include techniques like summarizing information in their own words, creating flashcards, or teaching the material to someone else. Active learning helps with better understanding and retention of information. 5. Take Regular Breaks and Practice Self Care: Remind your child to take regular breaks during their study sessions. Short breaks can help refresh their mind and prevent burnout. Encourage them to engage in activities they enjoy during these breaks, such as going for a walk or playing a game. Additionally, remind them to get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and stay hydrated to support their overall well-being and concentration. Remember, every child is unique, so it's important to tailor these study strategies to your child's individual needs and learning style.
