American foreign policy since the end of the Soviet Union has been based in the assumption of the Unipolar world. America as the only superpower and the global hegemon. therefore the main goal of American foreign policy is to maintain and expand American soft and hard power and bring the world into it's global coalition.
It's main challenges are
- Rogue states such as North Korea or Russia
- The growing influence and power of developing nations such as India
- China's demonstration of growing soft and hard power, playing at being a superpower herself.
It's main tools are
- Economic Might
- Cultural prestige and influence
- Diplomatic arrangements with American allies
- Military might
