It's been a while since I have read "The Lottery," but I do remember that the first time I read it, I kept asking myself, "What the heck is this lottery for?" And of course, we never really find out until the very end what the "winner" gets. So I think that by being purposely ambiguous and leaving her readers in the dark, Shirley Jackson creates both tension and suspense.
