Unlike dandelion, there's no lion in the origin of this word (dandelion = dent de lion, alluding to the toothed leaves of the plant). There is, however, another creature -a butterfly. That's because the giant roof of a pavilion might look like the wings of a butterfly, and in Latin the word for a butterfly is papilio.
There's a breed of dogs called papillon because they have ears that look like the wings of a butterfly.
