You ask: "AI vs. human tutoring: Which is best for learning?"
Which is better for eating dinner, a spoon or a fork? Computer-assisted instruction is a tool in the toolbox along with more traditional tools such as Socratic discourse, group-work, and portfolio-building. Using an LLM, for instance, can help guide a student working independently towards a better set of references based on the citations. Those resources in turn may provide a bevy of more citations. But in the end, shaping the skills and the worldview of the student also requires the wisdom of teacher, because ultimately, AI at best provides us a series of options, and generally does not deliver any wisdom about how to choose an option. A smart student uses any and all tools available to them, and consults experts in those tools given expertise in the domain in question.
