Bio

Hello! My name is Ashleigh, and I am looking to tutor students in different areas of English, including language, literature, test prep, grammar, and writing. I am mostly interested in tutoring older students (middle school - high school and adult), but am also open to younger students (first-fifth graders).

Hello! My name is Ashleigh, and I am looking to tutor students in different areas of English, including language, literature, test prep, grammar, and writing. I am mostly interested in tutoring older students (middle school - high school and adult), but am also open to younger students (first-fifth graders).

I've always had a love for reading, writing, and words in general (I recall from a young age being obsessed with reading the dictionary). All through school, I loved reading for fun, and had a passion for creative arts, like painting, drama, set-design, reading, and writing in school. In high school, I enrolled in honors English classes all four years and AP Studio Art in my senior year. I was inducted into the National Art Honor Society and the International Thespian Society in my senior year of high school. My love for art helped my appreciation for literature and language, by giving me greater attention to detail, which I applied to storytelling, themes, and wordplay in books and poems.

I graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in English Language and Literature. During that program, most of my literature studies were in Shakespearean and Romantic-era literature, as well as modern feminist, race, and LGBTQ critical theory. Additionally, I gained a background in sociology, mainly the roles of storytelling and the media in societies.

I care about encouraging others to appreciate literature and the written word as well, and tutoring is a good place to encourage that. The best thing about this is that there are so many avenues with which a tutor can help students appreciate these things, whether they need help preparing for testing, or learning English as a second language, or just getting help if they're having trouble with reading or writing.

I have tutored middle school students in literature, helping them with reading comprehension. When tutoring, I seek to help students learn by encouraging them to be active. Just telling my students the answers, I find, is not an efficient way to go about this. I seek to engage my students instead; to help them be more active in the learning process. I find that framing questions in different ways helps with reading comprehension, for instance. I care very much about my students, and not just helping them make the grade, figuratively or literally, but rather, helping them appreciate learning more.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I am a native English speaker (born in Buffalo, New York and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland). I also have a background in Spanish and French, so I have some understanding of English compared to and translated to and from other languages. I feel this is important in being able to teach English as a second language. In addition, I have excellent grammar and proofreading skills and have been educated in language and literature through the university level. In addition, I'm currently taking online non-credit courses offered by Montgomery college in teaching ESL just to learn more about it.

In addition to my English BA, I'm an avid reader and freelance writer with a great eye for detail. While finding freelance editing jobs has been hard, I often help my mom (who is a teacher herself and working toward a certification) edit and proofread applications she fills out and papers she writes.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

My educational background is in English Language and Literature. As such, I know quite a lot about sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. The written work I did in college was mostly self-edited, as is the freelance writing I currently do.
