Different requirements in terms of content and style across disciplines. For example, in statistics, they use APA format. In most English classes, they use MLA format. In one communications class, they used Chicago format. Additionally, fields like statistics obviously appreciate quantitative data, but more humanities-driven fields like English and communications may not. The greatest challenge is determining exactly what is appropriate for what field.

The secret to mastering academic writing is knowing how to break down the assignment/prompt, and then making sure that you adhere to the rules for that form of writing. Literature reviews and argumentative essays are written very differently.
It is also important to understand how different subject can have different priorities when analyzing written piece. Papers in the STEM field are often succinct and to the point, whereas English papers have a bit more tolerance for descriptive language and details. Similarly, deferent teachers/professors may want different things from their students.
In short, if you learn the basic essay structure, understand how to break down a prompt/assignment, and ask your teacher/professor for specifically what they would like to see, it is much easier to succeed in academic writing.
Mastering academic writing, including essays and research papers, can be challenging for many individuals, and there are several significant challenges that students commonly face:
- Understanding Academic Style and Expectations: Academic writing often requires a formal and structured style, which can be quite different from informal writing. Students must learn to follow specific formatting guidelines (such as APA, MLA, or Chicago style) and understand what is expected in terms of citations, references, and academic conventions.
- Research Skills: Academic writing often requires extensive research to support arguments and claims. Finding credible sources, evaluating their reliability, and properly integrating research into the writing can be challenging for many students.
- Critical Thinking: Academic writing requires critical thinking and the ability to analyze information, draw conclusions, and present a clear and logical argument. This can be difficult, especially for those who are not accustomed to thinking critically.
- Time Management: Academic assignments often have strict deadlines. Managing time effectively to conduct research, plan, write, and revise essays can be a significant challenge, especially when balancing multiple assignments.
- Structural Organization: Properly structuring an academic essay is essential. This includes creating a clear thesis statement, organizing ideas logically, and ensuring smooth transitions between paragraphs and sections.
- Grammar and Language Proficiency: Non-native English speakers may struggle with language proficiency, including grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. This can impact the overall quality of writing.
- Plagiarism and Ethical Concerns: Understanding and avoiding plagiarism can be a challenge. Students must learn how to properly cite sources and avoid unintentional plagiarism.
- Feedback Incorporation: Receiving feedback from instructors and peers is essential for improvement, but it can be challenging to understand and effectively incorporate feedback into future writing assignments.
- Writer's Block: Many students experience writer's block, where they struggle to start or continue writing. Overcoming this mental hurdle is crucial for productive writing.
- Perfectionism: Some students strive for perfection in their writing, which can lead to excessive editing and procrastination. Learning to balance striving for excellence with practical deadlines is important.
It's worth noting that these challenges can be overcome with practice, guidance, and support. Many educational institutions offer writing centers, workshops, and resources to help students improve their academic writing skills. Additionally, seeking feedback from professors and peers and dedicating time to practice and revision are essential steps toward mastering academic writing. Or you can just hire me. :)

I agree. Each class, depending on the subject matter, is going to require different formatting and citations. When you juggle multiple topic papers all using either MLA, APA, Chicago Style, it can get overwhelming to know which formatting styles ask for what and the possibility to mix them up is great. I find it useful to make oneself comfortable with many formatting types so that way you can be prepared for all classes!11/03/23
