What are some study strategies that I can use in order to retain all the information I need for exams?

There are several tried and true strategies to improve memorization skills which are vitally important in subjects such as History, geography, social sciences including psychology and sociology as well as Biology. Literally any subject that requires you to write a comprehensive essay requires the ability to memorize and retain information that you will later use in an evaluative essay or simply an essay to show that you know the facts of a given subject.

A few things you can do to help with writing an essay is to first prepare an outline. Second, make a chart with important dates and events to remember. Third, use acronyms or abbreviations that stand for something. For example, if you are writing about how to teach a student math you can use the acronym "PEMDAS" (parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction is last). The first aspect of writing a comprehensive essay that demonstrates your knowledge is to make a list of facts that you can develop to prove your argument or to indicate your learning. The facts can be memorized using several proven methods, including the "memory palace" where you store items in your imagination in corners of an imaginary room (or rooms) in a palace. Sounds weird, but it works! Another way to retain information is through the use of mnemonics. You can make up a word using the first letter of the items you need to retain ... it could be a real word or a nonsense word. For example, Suppose I need to remember somethings about the plasma membrane of cells. I might use the word PAPE to indicate Passive transport, Active transport, Phospholipid bilayer and Exocytosis. Those words then could spur me on to remember other things to be included in my essay such as endocytosis, pinocytosis, fatty acid tails, etc. Another important way of training yourself to remember study points is to relate items to your prior learning. There are many more techniques available to help one retain vast amounts of information and have it available for test purposes. Dr. Jane
