How To Rewrite a Declarative sentence to an Interrogative Sentence (a question).
In order to rewrite a declarative sentence as a question, think about how you might see this question on a quiz or how you might ask it if you were researching the topic. How would you "Ask Alexa"?
It's important to break down the statement and split the subject and verb from the complete answer in the predicate. The question may require part of the predicate, but not all of it. Remember the order in a question is often different. The predicate and verb usually comes before the subject.
In the assignment provided with the question, the instructions tell you to Use the word given. Then the required word for the question is given below the statement.
Lets take a look at the first question:
1. Tubers are part of the underground stem system of a potato plant.
What?
What is the word given to ask the question. Starting with the word what will be the most common way to write it, but the order can be changed.
I've bolded and italicized the subject and bolded the verb. I've underlined the section of the predicate which provides the answer the parts of the predicate that help clarify the question are italicized.
There are two ways to rewrite this statement as a question starting with what. Let's start with the simplest one, and then look at the more complex one. The third example will show how the order can be changed.
1) What are tubers?
2) What part of the potato plant are tubers?
3) Tubers are what part of the potato plant?
Let's look at the next question provided in the assignment. I will approach it the same way.
2. Potato plants store food in the tubers.
Where?
1) Where do potato plants store food?
2) Food is stored where in the potato plant?
Here are two more examples:
In this statement, the subject is actually the only answer, so when creating the question; the predicate becomes the subject.
3. The tubers are the edible part of the potato plant.
What?
1) What part of the potato plant is edible?
2) What is the edible part of the potato plant?
3) The edible part of the potato plant is what?
4. Ancient people of Peru developed a technique to freeze-dry potatoes.
Who?
1) Who developed a technique to freeze-dry potatoes?
2) A technique to freeze-dry potatoes was developed by who?
