Meronymy is a type of semantic relationship in linguistics, where one term is used as part of something.
Good examples would be: fruit < fruit tree (add any fruit you like that comes from a tree) or thumb< hand (add any other 'finger')
Hyponymy is also a semantic relationship but deals more with subclasses of things that are part of a more general class
Good examples: wolves < animals or butterflies < insects or spiders < arachnids
