To imitate someone or something is to try to be that someone or something.

To emulate someone or something is to try to be as good as that person or thing.

There is a difference.

Another way to think about it...

Imitate is to copy / mimic / literally do the same thing as who or whatever you are imitating. It can also have a negative connotation.

Example: Jon was imitating Jane's limp

Emulate is to try to be similar to someone in their, actions, personality, or any of their actions. Overall it has a more positive connotation.

Example: Joe emulates Dr. Jane's actions because Dr. Jane has such good bedside manner and Joe knows that having good bedside manner is important.
