There may be multiple characters that can distinguish amphibians from reptiles. Most cladograms show that reptiles, birds, and mammals (going up the tree) possess amniotic eggs whereas amphibians do not. Therefore, reptiles evolved from an ancestor of amphibians that developed amniotic eggs.
