The passage provided is in reference to Mansa Musa's hajj to Mecca. The author who witnessed his arrival saw the grandeur of this West African king and was marveled by his power, wealth, and prestige. During his journey and upon arriving to Mecca, King Musa spread an enormous amount of gold, had structures and schools built. It has been said that the amount of gold passed out, devalued the amount as a result of an influx of gold in the hands of many. He was by far the richest person in World History at the time of his life.
