Hi there, Shahhs!
In MLA format, your Works Cited/References page is kept excluded from your word count. Due to your set word count being 500 words maximum, you will want to avoid contributing the characters from your Works Cited page at the end of your paper.
In order to do this via Google Docs, simply highlight your 500 worded or less text portion and select the option on the upper-hand menu titled "Tools". Once selected press "Word Count". It will then entail a message along the lines of "438 words out of 510" for example. The '438' would be your word count of the portion you have highlighted, excluding your Works Cited page. Microsoft Word allows for a similar feature.
Our reasoning for excluding our references page from our word count in MLA is due to the word count referring to the information enlisted in the body of text at hand, which does not entail references. REGARDLESS, you will include your in-text citations in your word count.
I hope this helped you out! If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out at any time.
