Annie,
Our nation's veterans only owe loyalty to America, right? I'll put this crudely- their basic responsibility is to fight the bad guys in other countries and defend Americans.
But do you know how much aid our soldiers provide to other countries' citizens in war zones? It's so easy to find photos of our soldiers unloading and delivering heavy bags and boxes of food and all sorts of other supplies to the citizens of other countries who are suffering in the war zones. Please Google "Soldier delivering aid to other citizens"- the first photo shows a soldier delivering supplies to an orphanage in Afghanistan. Another photo that pops up is a soldier delivering toys to children in Baghdad.
Our army has our soldiers working on humanitarian missions in many different countries, especially in dangerous countries where regular American citizens (civilians) would be afraid to go and do volunteer work.
That's clearly above and beyond the basic responsibilities.
Hope this helps! :)
