Hydrolysis is when one reactant splits up into two or more products. Synthesis is when two reactants combine to form one product. The forward reaction is hydrolysis as A is splitting up into B and C. The reverse reaction is synthesis, as B and C combine to form A. Note that since the arrow is pointing in both directions, the reaction is reversible and can go both ways.
Knowing that the forward reaction is hydrolysis, we can say that A is the reactant (substrate) for hydrolysis and that B and C are the products of hydrolysis. Knowing that the reverse reaction is synthesis, we can say that B and C are the reactants for synthesis and that A is the product of synthesis.
