Will I be able to use pastels, colored pencils, and other mediums?

I will teach drawing in any medium that the student prefers or has access to. I find that the basic techniques tend to be the same no matter the material used, so I can work with whatever medium(s) the student prefers.

As someone with a studio art major who was self-taught before college, I have experience working with a variety of mediums at many price levels ranging from Crayola to professional grade. That means that I will be able to give tips for pretty much any material that the student wants to use.

I try to get to know the student and see what they want to draw and then I build on that. I like to create a sort of free space where everything is valid. To create this place I like to do scribble drawings, timed drawings anything that gives you less control.

In terms of materials, I like to use whatever the student has available to them. :)

I encourage both fantasy and realism in drawing. Children under the age of eight generally have amazing and unique perspectives on drawing, so I usually coach them by encouraging of what they have already invented and give tips for how to make it even better. Around age nine, children want to draw realistically. From that point, I offer help with perspective, proportion, shading, and composition.

There are many fun drawing exercises that can be used to loosen up the fear of making mistakes, including: scribble drawing, timed drawings, still life studies, left hand/ right hand drawing, negative space drawings and contour drawing.

I use the following mediums: pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, watercolor pencil, pen and pastels.
