How is the dialogue for wide shots recorded?

In scenes where the boom mic would have to be placed much too far from the actor in order to film the scene, how is the dialogue recorded? Is there some hidden microphone on the actor's clothing or does the actor voice-over in post-production?

In most instances they would use a mic called a Lavalier microphone, which is a wireless mic that is placed underneath the actors clothing. They might also use a mic that is very directional like a super cardioid mic or a shotgun mic, which are able to pick up the sound from a further distance away. These mic can be placed on a boom and aimed at the subject that is speaking.
