What is the name of this documentary?

There is a documentary. I thought it was by a guy named bobby brown but I don't think thats correct. The film maker would travel around middle america to small towns, what I would consider dying mid-west towns. He would just interview people, interesting things about the places. I think he was from Philadelphia. The documentaries were in black and white. I can not for the life of me remember the name of the documentary or the film makers name. These were probably made in the 80's or 90s. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
