CVC stands for Consonant, Vowel, Consonant. CVC is the first blending of letter-sounds that students learn when they begin reading. After learning individual letter sounds, the next step in learning to read is blending these sounds into a three letter word. CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) is the blend the student uses first. Examples are: hot, man, cat, dog, etc.

CVC represents consonant-vowel-consonant. An acronym that helps students decide what sound the vowel makes. The first consonant does not affect the vowel sound. If a vowel is followed by a consonant it is considered a closed syllable and the vowel is short. This is the first syllable type taught to students. Then we continue with vowels being closed in by digraphs (wh, sh, th, ch, ck) then blends (two consonants together that each make their own sound but are blended together when you sound them out).
