Write it all out at first, regardless of length. Then when you are done, read it aloud. I think you'll hear what is "extra" and be able to cut that right out. One specific tip I would suggest is dialogue tags: often we don't even need "s/he said" etc. as it becomes obvious who is speaking. Good luck, sounds like a great way to sharpen your skills!
