Both exams are used for admission to private elementary, middle, and high schools, but they are different in numerous ways.
The ISEE emphasizes quantitative reasoning and analytical problem-solving, making it a compelling choice for students who excel in math and logic. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so students should guess if they’re uncertain. Each multiple-choice question has four answer choices. The ISEE limits how many times students can take the test each admissions season.
The SSAT focuses heavily on verbal skills, including vocabulary, synonyms, and analogies, which may favor proficient readers and language-oriented students. Also, while the elementary level SSAT test does not penalize incorrect answers, the middle and upper level subtract one-quarter point; therefore an “educated guess” strategy is important. Each multiple-choice question has five answer choices. The SSAT allows more flexibility for retesting.
I have extensive experience helping students prepare for each test. I would be pleased to both help you compare the two tests and to guide your child to success.
