Most characters in literature are motivated to make big decisions by a combination of personal desires, fears, and values. Conflict also shapes character motivation. Internal conflicts, including the desire to do the right thing, and external conflicts, such as danger or pressure from others, force characters to act. Their choices are most often influenced by what they honor most: friendship, family, justice, or personal growth. These motivations develop the plot throughout the story and reveal the character's personality and priorities.
