Studying with a tutor could give one real-time support, answering any questions one might have and possibly help one stay more accountable in their task. On the other hand, depending on where one is in their stage of study and review, studying alone especially the first-time around could provide a a slower and safer environment where one could go at their own pace to take in new information without feeling any perceived pressure or judgement. Exposure to new material by oneself, could get the brain juices flowing and activate creative learning which could then be reinforced for the second or third review by an accountability coach or tutor.
