Every good reader gets stumped sometimes, and a good reader notices when the text is no longer making sense to them, stops, and breaks it down sentence-by-sentence or even word-by-word. With Google, sometimes it helps to get the answer and figure out why that's what the text is saying rather than discovering the meaning on your own. Lastly, ask questions. Focusing on plot events, characterization, setting, and themes is essential to understanding what the author is saying about the world and life in general. Look up background information on the author, setting (time/place), and the book itself. This will open up so many things for you!

In informational texts (non-narratives), you would definitely focus on headings, flipping them into questions, and using the text to answer the questions. For example, a heading like "Excavation" could be flipped to "What is excavation?" Then, you would read the paragraphs about excavation, looking at the first/second sentence for the main idea. This way you can even outline the author's main points, and this is something you can do in literature, too, by outlining the scenes using a plot mountain. Be sure to take notes whenever you read because you will forget important details.

My last piece of advice is that annotating, marking the text when possible, is a great way to visualize what good readers do when they read. Mark confusing words and sections, highlight important details and terms, outline text as you go, marking the points on the page like an outline. We can't always annotate the text, but we can do these things verbally as well.

First, we should read the heading or title of the passage and activate the students knowledge on the topic. An effective way to do this is by using something called a KWL chart. This chart is a graphic organizer that asks students what they already know (K) about this topic and any bolded vocabulary words in the passage, asks them what (W) they want to learn and then the L in this cart is filled out after reading the passage as the teacher and student discuss what they've learned. This sets a purpose for reading which helps a struggling reader stay focused as they read. This is one way to help with reading comprehension of informational text along with highlighting main idea and supporting details.

When it comes to helping students with reading comprehension of fictional text, I like to have the student analyze the title of the story, along with any pictures or cover art. We then activate their prior knowledge by talking about other books they may have read that may be similar, as well as making predictions about what may happen in the story. While reading the story, I have students actively engage with the text by stopping to visualize and ask questions while they read and continue to make predictions about what may happen next. It's important to model these reading strategies while reading to younger students so they learn how to do this independently as they read, as well.

As you can see, activating prior knowledge and setting a purpose for reading before we read is an extremely important step in increasing comprehension of both fictional and informational text. This allows the student to tap into the schema (the knowledge or personal experience the reader already has about the topic) so they can more easily synthesize what they learn with what they already know.

After reading, I have students summarize what they've read and complete grade level appropriate graphic organizers to determine the elements of the story in fiction or main idea and supporting details in non-fiction. Having students discuss what they've read and answer questions about the text with a partner before sharing their answers with a larger group is also helpful in developing higher order thinking skills. This is called the "Think, Pair, Share:" strategy and it's a great tool to use as it not only helps with comprehension as the students learn from their peers, but it also encourages collaboration and public speaking skills.
