Foreign and familiar are relationship labels that should not be considered competing against each other for preference. Both terms are by the individual's definition and there can be different interpretations and subsequent application. In positive interpersonal relationships, the relationship dynamic is closer and richer when one is more familiar with a person than knowing less about the partner than makes them foreign.
