The short answer is yes. Growing up as a biracial (half-Latino) individual in a mostly white community is very isolating of itself. However, that is increased tenfold whenever I only see the heroines and heroes offered to me in childhood being mostly white as well. Where were the Latino superheroes? Writers? Singers?
This isn't just a racial issue either. Those with disabilities also deserve to be represented. As well as those with different body types. While things are growing ever-diverse through globalization and the internet connecting everything and everyone- our media should grow more diverse as well.

I would say that I want to share most things in my life with friends and family and with humans in general. For example, about 85% of our lives consists of doing things that other people do such as going to work, washing dishes, eating with friends, driving, walking, cooking etc. Personally, I don't need to see these activities portrayed positively in the media to be inspired to do them. However, the remaining 15% of my life consists of the activities that are more or less unique to me. For example, I like to write in a unique way, exercise in a unique way, and read what I like to read. For these activities, I do feel more alone if I don't see them portrayed positively in the media. Fortunately, they are. For example, there are inspirational movies about struggling writers and artists who succeed in the end. In conclusion, if something is (more or less) unique to me, then I benefit from seeing it portrayed positively in the media.08/31/23
