Phonemic awareness is the fundamental building block of reading success. The ability to hear sounds that correlate to particular letters or combinations of letters is often missed by our dyslexic students. I have noticed that reading instruction has often assumed a phonemic awareness. Many students need to be reminded of that awareness. Without that phonemic awareness, they will not be able to understand the use of phonics in their reading. They find it difficult to decode words into their parts if they can't distinguish the sounds.

The critical difference between them is phonological awareness is a person's ability to recognize the various sound units when recognizing a word. On the other hand, Phonemic awareness is the ability to focus on individual sounds in spoken language.

Phonemic Awareness is solely auditory. It is being able to distinguish the sounds that represent specific letters or groups of letters. The use of phonemic awareness allows the learner to break a into syllables and into individual phonemes. Phonemic Awareness further includes the ability to identify where in the word the sound occurs i.e. beginning middle or end. Mastery in Phonemic Awareness is an indicator for reading success. Phonics is being able to correlate the letter sounds with the appropriate graphemes. The learner uses phonics to encode effectively and efficiently.
