Even ancient books and stories can help us understand ourselves today. The messages of returning to home are as relevant in the Odyssey as they are today. Ancient Eastern manuals of conflict e.g. The Art of War contain significant wisdom applicable to many of the things we wish to do today. And ancient art can emotionally connect us to a distant past and by this method we can learn to value the future. You can't be too concerned with the future (and, therefore, what you do today) if you don't understand that we today came from a past. Historical disciplines teach us such lessons.
