Whenever you are asked to write a thesis paper, I recommend the following process:
- UNDERSTAND the content. What is the literal meaning of the text? Then ask, what main message, or questions, does the writer bring up? If you're unsure how to answer these questions, ask your teacher. You can also study with a tutor who can help you with reading comprehension.
- FREEWRITE about your own thoughts and reactions. Put pen to paper, or hands to a keyboard, and write without stopping for 15 minutes. Another thing you can try is a MIND MAP in which you write your thoughts and observations, and connect them on the page. Find out what you think of the text.
- ANALYZE your thoughts and choose the idea which has the most support in the text. For example, if you think a poem is about overcoming hardship, make sure you have at least three or four good line references to support the idea. Then turn it into a statement: "This poem shows that people can overcome huge hardships."
- WRITE your thesis statement at the top of your paper, and remember that whatever you write, it must support that argument.
- ORGANIZE your evidence into three body paragraphs and start writing!
