¡Saludos! I'm a bilingual tutor who loves helping people improve their language skills, either in English or Spanish. It doesn't matter how old or young you are--I enjoy working with children, young people, and adults. For all of my students I desire to foster creativity, confidence, and a true joy in learning. Additionally, I love helping people to express themselves in writing. Grammar skills, business writing, and creative skills are all necessary in today's world.

In the past, I taught TESOL English classes for adults and children in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. I also spent two years teaching Spanish to middle-grade learners, and three years teaching English writing of all kinds. Currently I tutor TESOL, Spanish, SAT skills, and writing.

My education includes a bachelor’s degree in English with a writing concentration, and I am fluent in Spanish. I would be delighted to work with you in either English or Spanish, helping you to improve your language skills. Gracias y que Dios le bendiga.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

My first job as an ESOL instructor was in college, where I helped English learners improve their writing skills. I also taught English to children as part of a church ministry, and moved to Puerto Rico to teach ESOL to children and adults. I worked for Pan-American Language Institute in Bayamon, PR. Since that time, I have moved back to the States and begun private tutoring in English. Though my style varies from student to student, I always aim for fun, interactive classes focusing on both conversation and writing skills. I like to use the Cambridge Interchange textbooks, along with various internet resources. I love teaching English for many reasons. It gives me great joy to see students' progress as they gain in confidence and skill. Also, I enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds and helping them to thrive in their new environment. If you know someone who needs English tutoring, let me know!
Spanish,

Spanish

I studied Spanish for many years, throughout high school and college. Desiring to become more fluent, I began to volunteer with a church in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I lived with host families and participated in many community projects. I became fluent in Spanish, and made some wonderful friends during this time. Eventually I moved to San Juan and worked there for six months. Currently, I live in Georgia with my husband. We speak Spanish in the home and regularly keep in touch with our Puerto Rican family. I love teaching Spanish! I can help people from all levels of learning, whether they are beginners or at the AP level. It's my desire to spread the joy that comes from being bilingual, participating in a different culture. I like a lot of interaction and practicality--not just memorizing words but being able to use them in a real-life conversation. It's also vital that students include audio Spanish in their daily lives (Spanish-language TV, music, radio, etc). When I teach grammar, I try to do it within a context, so they can put the grammar into conversation/writing right away.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been teaching elementary-age children for seven years, in classroom situations and also one-on-one. Currently I tutor children ages 4-10 in Spanish and English skills. Previously, I taught English to children at PanAmerican Language in Puerto Rico; and for five years in my Vermont hometown, I worked as a substitute teacher and para-educator in elementary schools.

From a young age I have been passionate about reading and writing. I graduated from Wheaton College, Illinois, in 2010 with a BA in English. After working as a substitute English teacher, I began a writing class for homeschooled students. It went so well that I also started work as a private tutor. Since then I have worked with students of varying ages and backgrounds, helping them improve their English skills (both reading and writing). For me, there's nothing better than sharing my love of words with young people, and helping them to get more interested in reading and writing. It is also great to see them become more successful in their class or life pursuits, because of their better knowledge of English.

Literature,

Literature

From childhood, I have been an avid reader. I loved my classic literature assignments in high school. As a college English major, I read and studied ancient and modern literature from Britain, American, Russian, Latin-American, Spanish and other backgrounds. I love to read and analyze themes, literary style, figurative language, and more! As a tutor, I have helped students understand and write about poetry, short stories and fiction. I especially enjoy helping students analyze written work and create a thesis paper.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

As a passionate reader and writer, I did well on the SAT verbal section. Studying English in college, and working as an English teacher/tutor, I have had a lot of practice since then with SAT skills. Skim-reading, reading for the "main idea," summarizing passages, and increasing vocabulary are all crucial skills for the SAT. In my tutoring of SAT students, I have also shared a number of important test-taking tips that apply to this particular test. It would be my pleasure to work with you and help you get the score you want.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

As a passionate reader and writer, I did well on the SAT verbal section. As a writing student in college, and again as an English teacher/tutor, I have had a lot of practice since then with SAT skills. Advanced grammar skills are crucial for this exam, especially in key areas. Most important, though, is the essay section. I have coached many people in the writing of strong SAT essays. Finally, I like to share important test-taking tips that apply to the SAT. It would be my pleasure to work with you and help you get the score you want.
Writing,

Writing

I've always loved writing. As a child, I wrote stories as gifts for family members, and this writing habit continued. I studied English in college, with a writing concentration. Focusing on poetry, fiction, and memoir, I completed many writing projects and began submitting work to magazines. A few of my poems have been published. My love of words translates naturally into a desire to coach writers, young and old. I have worked in the following positions: writing consultant for graduate students, classroom creative writing teacher, TESOL instructor, and private English/writing tutor. With my passion for helping people express themselves on paper, I am always willing to spend time assisting writers. As far as teaching style goes, it depends on each student's particular needs. Some students benefit from lots of creative exercises, while others also require grammar practice. Some students need to start at the beginning, learning how to organize a paragraph. However, I always include "freewriting" techniques; freewriting helps at all stages of the writing process. Also I try to find out what my students are passionate about, encouraging them to write about what they love.
