I have found when students are struggling with reading comprehension, they also struggle with decoding. Decoding is the process by which students are able to break a word apart into its different phonemes/ sounds. When students come across a word they are unsure of they may try to sound it out, but if students are confused by the letters and the sounds they represent; sounding out a word does not help them in their decoding. Students may also struggle with their fluency while reading. Sometimes students gloss over words and omit them while reading and this can affect their reading comprehension. Students may struggle with retaining information while they are reading, and they struggle to retell the important information for the text.

I have found in working with students in reading/reading comprehension that the student may have trouble with just understanding or remembering what they read. This is the result of lack of engagement or just easily distracted. My solution to this is to help them by re-reading certain segments of the reading material and asking questions. It helps the student to read more readily. Depending upon the student’s age, it is also advisable to just break the reading section into parts by paragraph and just ask questions after each paragraph. This helps the student to think about what they have read. Sometimes a beginner reader is so caught up in just trying to sound out the words that they are not actively thinking about what the story is about. This is why I like to discover the student’s interests so I can use those interests in finding what the student may enjoy reading. I really love seeing a student ask questions about the reading material and even laugh about the story. It makes for a fun tutoring session in seeing this type of participation.

When students have a reading comprehension problem, I look first at their ability to understand and process individual sentences. Do they know the meanings of all of the words? Are they clear about the meanings of the adjectives or adverbs and of the prepositional phrases?-- for there is how the sentence meanings can change. When several sentences or even paragraphs are put together to form a passage to be understood, I look to see that the student can identify the main idea and what ideas support it. Next, are there important sequences or names that need to be remembered or interacted with? What associations can they draw from the content of the passage with their own life, in the world, or with another reading or movie? What inferences and conclusions can the student draw?
