If you're referring to The Crucible, and I have to believe that you are, one of the tropes Miller used was secrecy. John and Abigail's affair had to be kept secret, the girls secretly plotted their feigned witchcraft illness and abuse. So secrecy would definitely be one way. Only when John tells the truth and bares his soul, letting his secret out can he finally begin to feel like a man again.
