In some states, maybe more than just some, there is no curriculum for preschool and it has even been stated that teaching the key components that are needed for Kindergarten is a negative. My mother is a retired PreK teacher and she was not supposed to "teach" anything; however, she did. LOL.....I think that certain things should be taught in PreK and is also hopefully taught at home such as name, colors, body parts, possibly at least a good portion of the alphabet.
Yes, I would want them coming in to Kindergarten with some background knowledge since all do not learn at the same time on the same day. Most of the skills taught in Kindergarten are a natural process at home anyway when modeling things for the child like "where's your eye?", "where's your nose?", "let's count to 10", etc. The draw back: PreK isn't mandated....ages 6-16 (in GA, VA, SC and VA (states I'm certified in)--so some don't get that PreK exposure.
