Teaching and Tutoring ESL for 2.5 Years
Brief Summary: International students need multi-faceted holistic support to not just focus on college classes, but all aspects of life they are adapting to. Forming communities and having inclusive classroom projects is critical to international student success.
While working with international and multilingual students college students for two years, I realized students are not only in a different country to study business or medicine or whatever they are majoring in--which seems like a very simple statement. Students are in another country and have to learn everything about the new place they are living in. While teaching English, we incorporated short passages about the culture of the city we were in, like certain phrases, sports teams, and traditions. That way students were able to feel more comfortable in their surroundings and new home.
Another important thing to recognize is why a student is in another country-- and how their international identity is VALUABLE to their education. All students in a classroom should be given opportunities to share and embrace their identities and experiences, it's important to include everyone as to not isolate international students from the other students. Another important point is that it shares information and celebrates culture in both ways when including all the students, whether international or not. International students can share their identities with resident students and resident students with international students, so it is beneficial to everyone.
For example, the first project completed in a majority international student class I was assistant-teaching in was "What makes you you?". Which had students think about, what people or traditions they held close to their hearts, thought about frequently in their heads, and held in their arms. Some students spoke about their homes, families, school studies, and holidays they celebrated. Creating bonds with students over their similarities, curiosities, or even differences is very motivating to all students alike.
Online versus on-campus determines a few things such as practicing a language or customs and culture. Generally, treat your University goal as you treat your job in planning, scheduling, committing, executing, and delivering. Keeps costs low in your study efforts and create high output in your assignments, grades, and achievement of your degree.

I currently work with international students from many different regions of the world: Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Peru, Russia.
Every student has a different learning style and list of goals. There is no one-stop shop solution for success. And fluency does not happen overnight.
Successful students demonstrate common characteristics: discipline to practice, fearlessness about making mistakes, willingness to learn.
The quickest learners immerse themselves in the target language. They study, work, and socialize in their target language.
My role is to guide students toward fluency through a range of authentic, real-word activities.
Never hesitate to contact me to learn more about how our collaboration can help you succeed.

Dear Follower(s),
I would like to answer this question to help you build confidence. First 3 things to remember is LIVE, BREATH, SPEAK English. Your life from YouTube Videos, TV Channels, Friend Meetings, Work, School, and Play should all be involved in English.
It's about being involved in the language and learning every part. If you don't know how to say something don't give it up, look it up. Fix your mistakes every time you notice you made one and don't worry about correcting yourself in front of others. Just because you are tired doesn't mean you should put on your favorite TV show not in English, or should watch with English subtitles all the time (unless you want to learn reading and writing.)
Learning a language doesn't take a short period of time. Sometimes it takes over 7000 hours of study to learn the language and be comfortable with it. So, to increase more quickly, you need to make sure your life is all about English, even at home or your days off.
Breath it, Speak it, Live it.
Good luck! And I hope this helps. Please let me know if you would like a lesson and I can teach you the skills to improve quicker on your own, as well as, find your mistakes of difficulties in learning and how to overcome them.
Sincerely,
Niki
