We can eliminate B as there is no reference to 'treasure' in the passage. Also the passage clearly states 'the fight is not yours/nor meet for any but me alone'. He's essentially saying that this is his fight and not for anyone else (the fight is not for 'ye heroes in harness' and that they should 'wait ye the finish' (of the fight) and 'any for me alone'. This means we can elminate C. as he is explicitly saying he doesn't want help. This leaves us with A or D. He doesn't indicate anything about the fight being 'easy' so we are left with A as Beowulf as he wants to 'measure' his might and 'play the hero'.
