This would be a characterization of Puritanism though a poor and largely pejorative characterization of it, particularly as it relates to Jonathan Edwards. The man was hardly tyrannical. He was short, skinny and spoke in a very high tenor voice that was not remotely considered a good voice for preaching. He was however the theological giant of his age and has been remembered as "America's Theologian" by many.
