According to a large study looking at approximately 540,000 invasive colorectal cancers around that time, the Middle Atlantic division had the highest incidence rate of colorectal cancer, and was likely due to a higher percentage of the population that was obese, engaged in no physical activity, and smoked, compared to the Mountain region, which had the lowest incidence rate.
