I'm a parent and an instructor. The first thing you need to do is determine what type of learner your child is. Some children are visual, while others are auditory. When I teach and work with students, I approach learning from multiple directions.
- I have them read the material in short bursts and ask them if they understood what they read.
- Physical visuals or computer interactives help them manipulate what they have learned, depending on the subject. You can also use analogies here to things they understand in order to explain a subject.
- When you are asking questions, have them write down the answers. Writing forms pathways in your brain that improve working memory.
- Explain the subject or find a really good educational video (not a dry one) so they can listen
When learning, employ the senses. You will find out what works best for your child when it comes to understanding and learning material.
