By helping him or her recognize, realize, and relate the sounds to the (artificial) symbols. Then help them reproduce the symbols as sounds. Help the child learn the speech production first. I have helped children as young as 3 years old to do so and learn to read very quickly. Master the sounds-symbols relationship first then he or she will learn to read most readily without hesitation, no matter how long or archaic the words will be.

As a parent, one of the best things you can do to help your child learn to read is to promote interest in reading within your home. Your child should see you use literacy skills often. This can take many different forms. For example, reading recipes, magazines, and of course books. Scheduling time for reading in your home is a great way to promote a love of reading. This can mean reading a bedtime story every night, having 20 minutes of quiet reading time where the whole family reads together or separately, or even reading a quick encouraging message or story before work/school. Trips to the library are a great way to figure out what subjects your child may be interested in reading about. Also, there are many apps available to help children learn to read using a phone, tablet, or computer. You do not need to know how to teach reading to help your child be successful. The key is to make reading a fun and expected part of daily life in your family.
