By helping him or her recognize, realize, and relate the sounds to the (artificial) symbols. Then help them reproduce the symbols as sounds. Help the child learn the speech production first. I have helped children as young as 3 years old to do so and learn to read very quickly. Master the sounds-symbols relationship first then he or she will learn to read most readily without hesitation, no matter how long or archaic the words will be.
