Here are some suggestions:
. Read the poem aloud one or more times. The sounds will increase your understanding of the poem.
. Focus first on the part(s) of the poem that you already understand. That will help you as you move into the more difficult sections of the poem.
. Briefly paraphrase or summarize in your own words the action or thought in the poem.
. Don't try to understand the poem all at once. Read and understand. Then leave the poem alone for a while and come back to it later in the day or even a day or two later. You will find you understand the poem better if you give yourself more time and more life experience in between.
. Read other poems, even a poem a day, to become a more experienced poetry reader. Here is one site that may help you.
