When I read English novels, I find some sentences are very long and hard to understand. How can I find a way to better understand them?

Some English sentences are very long and convoluted. No matter how long the sentence is, find the subject and verb. Then look for the relationship between modifiers, phrases and clauses to the subject and the verb.
