I have a B.A. in Dramatic Art and a certificate in American Sign Language.

I have tutored low literacy adults and enjoy the discovery when someone 'gets it'. I also teach English as an Other Language to adults. Studies do not come easy for me, so I understand that sometimes people need extra help or a different viewpoint to understand something new. I find that many times students fall behind because they find the material dull. I believe in breaking complex problems into components to make the subject understandable.

My goal is to present material in a way that the student will understand the basics and be able to move to the next level with confidence.

Public Speaking

I have a BA in Dramatic Art and studied speaking skills, linguistics and phonetics in pursuit of a career in the theater. I have performed in numerous community theater and small professional theater productions of the years. I know (and can explain) techniques for improving speech quality and calming nerves when having to face a group.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I teach ESOL by total immersion. I tailor each session to the needs and vocabulary of the student. I don't spend a lot of time explaining grammar, but use grammar and vocabulary to help students reach their goal. My training in theater arts has given me the tools to teach students American pronunciation as part of their vocabulary lessons. I have had the privilege to teaching ESOL to financial managers, journalists, pharmacists, accountants and other professionals. I always remember that my students are intelligent adults who have come to learn another skill. Most importantly, I believe that the learning experience for adults should not be a chore but something they look forward to each time that we meet.
Grammar,

Grammar

I love English grammar. Although the fashion is to promote fluency without focusing on how or why the language works. I teach students the basic eight parts of speech, then show students how each piece fits together with the others. I teach students how to make sure that subject/verb match and the importance of antecedents when using pronouns. My students learn that grammar is the foundation for their expressions, not simply rules that have no place in their communication. I teach students that grammar is a puzzle and my method is to show a student how to put the puzzle together to make many beautiful pictures.

I am a former volunteer with the Washington Literacy Council where I tutored low-literacy adults and trained other tutors on using the 'Wilson' method of reading. The Wilson method provides a structured way to using sounds to read and spell and also encourages students to write. The Wilson method is adaptable to all age levels and is great tool for those who wish to begin a life of reading pleasure.

We talked about past tense, past participle, and pronunciation. She is a great teacher, during the class we reviewed several topics and she understood my frustration in regards pronunciation. I recommend her she is very knowledgeable.

Tutor responded:

I'm glad that you're pleased. I think it's important to let students determine the material that they want to focus on.

Knowledgeable and patient

Moiré taught me how to think about what I am reading and to paraphrase in my own words. I enjoy working with Moiré because she has a beautiful sense of humor. She points out when you make mistakes when reading. A person can learn a lot from her. She is awesome in reading and comprehension. I would recommend her to any student who to improve his or her reading skills.

Help to read better!

Some of the thing Moire L. help me was taking it back to the begin such as what combination of letter make it long sound and make a short sound. How to breakdown word. What I like about Moire L. tutoring she make it fun and encouraging me as I go. Very honest in they way she tutor, if I'm doing will then she will let me know that I'm doing well. Vice versa if I'm not trying or working hard she will let me know, which I like to be push. Moire L has help me to accomplish the confidence to read out loud, to take my time to breakdown the word to know what it is and how it sounds. I'm looking forward to the time when I want need to be tutor.

Great teacher

Moire is the perfect teacher if you’re looking for someone that is patient and a good listener. From the very first day, she made me feel comfortable with her. She was able to figure out my exact problem after the third working session. She always gives good examples when explaining things. I recommend Moire if you need to brush up on grammar /punctuation or an ELS student. Make sure you get her book of choice.

Patient and compassionate tutor

Moire definitely knew the importance of being disarming and patient. Learning the basics as an adult learning is very challenging both technically and emotionally. Moire seems to understand that. Moire is insightful, playful and knowledgeable about the content that she is teaching, and seems to understand the needs of the student.

Puts you at ease! Knowledgeable and humorous.

Following an illness where I encountered mild cognitive issues I reached out to Moire. I needed help with refreshing my reading skills, including pronunciation of words and sounds. Moire is so knowledgeable of the English language and the history of languages around the world. I credit her to getting me back on track! Besides her knowledge she is patient, kind, and interesting. Her humor put me at ease to regain what I lost. If you have an hesitation or feelings of embarrassment or unease, Moire is just the instructor you need.
