Bias will prevent our understanding of the world because there are things that we know, but don't want to believe. Using the conviction as an example. Remember that the evidence said that the defendant was innocent. Did the result of the seem to be fair or bias?
You should also think of the farmer's son when he came over to eat. Jean treated him pretty cruelly. Remember how she was scolded for it? Her bias against him was based on his difference from them but she had no understanding of him. In that way, she was prevented from learning more of the truth about how people live.
Remember, Jean is just a child. Children don't always know that people live in different ways.
