English Essay Research Essay Thesis Help! Urgent!

Question

I need help constructing a solid, arguable thesis statement. Here is the assigned question:

"Why are imaginative worlds that differ from the everyday world essential elements of two of the novels we have studied? What are the symbolic purposes of such worlds for the characters, audience, and/or author, and what does this imply about the psychological development of child readers and/or the 'real' world?"

We are encouraged to narrow down the question, and it is highly important we answer "why" part of the question.

The two texts I am using are Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and the Hobbit.

I need help with a thesis and a general structure of what I should or could argue based off the thesis.

Here is my working thesis:

Imaginary worlds are important for children's literature since they allow readers to plunge into the text deeper and truly beleive in the reality of the events.

This thesis obviously needs a lot of work, and can be changed moderately or significantly.

In children's literature an imaginary world allows the child to become a part of the story. They can fight the evil wizard or walk the epic trail in their mind. Being a part of the world creates excitement about reading and thus the children read more.

 

I believe this is your idea in multiple sentences. One of the ways to create a good thesis statement is to write out what you are looking for in several sentences, even a paragraph, and then begin editing. Some of what you have written will end up in the final essay; the thesis statement though is the essence of what you are writing. Short, to the point, and direct a good thesis statement is often an essay in and of itself. 

 

If what I wrote in the first paragraph appeals to you then write it in words you would use, edit it down to make it make sense for you. The stories you have chosen have shaped children's minds and created a sense of play and desire that involves reading; something that in our modern age is seen as time consuming and boring. Convey that same sense with your essay and you will win over your instructor.
