To make sure your child passes Indiana’s IREAD-3 test, the most important thing is to practice the exact skills the test covers. These include phonics (knowing letter sounds and patterns), decoding (sounding out unfamiliar words), vocabulary (understanding meanings and multiple-meaning words), and reading comprehension (understanding what they read). If your child struggles in these areas in 1st or 2nd grade, early support like tutoring focused on these skills makes a huge difference. Working with a teacher trained in Orton-Gillingham and reading instruction can give them targeted help to build confidence and ensure they’re ready to pass.
How do I ensure that my child passes the IRead 3 test in Indiana?
This test is required by the state of Indiana. Every student will take it in the 2nd grade in April and then again in the 3rd grade in April. If they do not pass, they must take it again. Those who do not pass in the 3rd grade WILL BE RETAINED in 3rd grade, by state law. The only exceptions to this are those who have been enrolled in a US school for LESS than 2 years and those with a severe enough special education disability. Very few students qualify for exemptions.
The key to passing this test is practicing the specific skills that are tested. If your child is struggling in 1st or 2nd grade with phonics, specifically sound and letter correspondence, decoding words, matching words with meanings, multiple meaning words and with reading comprehension, they would benefit from tutoring in these specifics. As a 3rd grade teacher with Orton Gillingham certification as well as a reading specialist license after completing 80 hours of coursework in Literacy, I can help!
