What is the difference between topic and main idea?

The Topic is what the author is talking about. It's the general theme of the text and stands often in only a noun or a noun phrase.
The main idea is what is said about the topic. It's the message or the point of view of the author about the subject. It is usually made of a sentence and reveals what the scene shows or tells us and may have a moral lesson to draw from the story. So, the topic sets the stage and the main idea explains the actions and the meaning of the event on stage.
For example, we could put in scene a day a family spent in nature. In the development we learn that on that specific day, it was raining. The family, who were so eager and excited about going out, did not cancel the outing in the hope that the rain would pass quickly. They got wet and all of them caught a cold and returned sick.
The topic can be “ A day spent in nature” or “ A family outing in nature” Any of them is good.
The main idea can be: The outing went all wrong because all the family members got sick by rain shower” or “The family rigid commitment to their plan, despite obvious bad weather, directly caused their outing to fail and made everyone sick” (the main idea is implicit)
Now if you ask yourself the question: What could I draw as the morale of this topic?
You could answer: “Stubornly ignoring changing circumstances can turn anticipation into misfortune” or “Adaptability is a key component of successful plans” (the morale is explicit)
Tips to find the topic and the main idea
For the topic: After reading, ask yourself: "In general, what is the single theme that connects all the sentences?" The answer you find in 2 or 3 words is the topic.
For the main idea: The answer that you can formulate in a complete and precise sentence about the facts exposed in the text is very likely the main idea.
✅ Topic
The topic is what the text is mostly about — it's usually just one or two words.
📌 Think: One word or short phrase.
For Example: Sharks, The solar System, Ab Lincoln
✅ Main Idea
The main idea is the most important point the author is making about the topic.
It’s usually a full sentence and answers the question:
“What is the author saying about the topic?”
📌 Think: The topic + what the author wants you to know about it.
For Example:
- The solar system is made up of the sun and eight planets that orbit it.
- Sharks are powerful hunters that help keep the ocean ecosystem balanced.
- Abraham Lincoln was a strong leader who helped end slavery in the U.S.
